Kurzfassung:
In the 20th century the Dönmes, descendants of followers of Sabbatai Tsevi who adopted Islam in the late 17th century and who were centered in Salonica, came under Turkish rule. They were often discriminated against as Jews, with whom they were identified. Both the Dönmes and the Jews were accused of involvement in a worldwide conspiracy to Westernize and de-Islamicize Turkey. The Turkish press in the 1920s attributed negative Jewish characteristics to the Dönmes. Since the 1970s, published books have repeated anti-Zionist and antisemitic accusations against the Dönmes.
