Abstract:
Maas (1877-1970) was a Protestant pastor. He officiated in Heidelberg between 1915-43, assisted persecuted Jews during the Nazi period, and helped 40 clergymen and many Christian children of Jewish origin to emigrate to England. In 1940 he was dismissed from his pastoral position, in 1942 he was no longer permitted to teach religion, and in 1943 he was requested to retire. In 1944 he was sent to France for forced labor. After the war he returned to Heidelberg and became active in dealing with the issue of German guilt for the Holocaust and Christian-Jewish reconciliation. He was awarded the title of Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
