Kurzfassung:
Examines the story of Filippo de Nis, a Jewish convert to Christianity who was born in Portugal, but lived in the 1580s in Venice. In 1585 he was accused of Judaizing by the Venetian Inquisition, put on trial, and after an extended imprisonment repented of the sin of Judaizing and reconciled with the Church. In 1587 he was freed from prison, and in 1589 a Jesuit priest who supervised his behavior attested that he became a good Christian. Argues that this is not the conclusion of the story. Analyzes a responsum given after 1594 by R. Solomon ben Abraham Ha-Kohen, most probably in Salonika, on a case of an apostate. The details of the case lead to an identification of the apostate as Filippo de Nis, who evidently fled to the Ottoman Empire and returned to Judaism. Contends that the De Nis case shows the inconclusiveness of historical records, in particular those of the Inquisition dealing with Conversos. Historical evidence is not complete enough to determine the life course of many Conversos, and thus precludes generalized theses on either the rarity or the commonness of crypto-Judaism at the time.
