    Abstract: The main aim of the article is to analyse the demographic and social situation of the Jewish population in the Polish lands at the beginning of Polish independence. The article's chronological framework begins with the beginning of World War I and ends with the early 1930s. The spatial framework are the territories that found themselves within the borders of the reborn Polish state after the Treaty of Riga. The primary research material are the findings of the 1921 census. The author attempts to answer the following research questions: What was the demographic situation and the professional structure of the Jewish population in reborn Poland like? What kind of problems did the Jews need to cope with? What was the economical and legal status of the Jews on the eve of the Poland’s independence? The research methods are: traditional analysis of historical primary and secondary sources, and elements of sociological, comparative, and legal methods.
