Kurzfassung: Against Konrad Schmid’s thesis that the pre-P ancestral and Exodus traditions existed as competing origin myths that were conceptually independent from each other, this article argues that this conceptual independence is difficult to prove in the context of the ancient Israelites’ oral-written culture. Moreover, societal negotiation about the past should not be misconstrued as a sign of traditions’ conceptual independence. Competition between origin stories, or selective emphasis on one story over another, does not indicate their conceptual independence.

Schlagwort(e): Bible Language, style ; Loneliness Biblical teaching ; Hebrew language, Biblical Terms and phrases
Kurzfassung: The Hebrew Bible frequently portrays lonely characters and voices, yet a specific study of »loneliness« is not yet available. As a basic semantic and exegetical inquiry, this article surveys the usage of the lexeme בד/בדד and analyses four passages in which the expression »sitting alone« (בדד + ישׁב) appears, namely, Lev 13:46, Jer 15:17, Lam 1:1 and 3:28. Of key interest are the literary environment and discourse structures in which בדד + ישב stands. The characterisation and evaluation of loneliness likewise receive some attention. The study concludes with a synthesis that highlights connections between loneliness, society, God, and death.

Schlagwort(e): Bible. Criticism, interpretation, etc. ; Theodicy Biblical teaching
Kurzfassung: The Book of Habakkuk differs from other prophetic books in both form and content. Formally, its use of inductive prophecy, in the form of the prophet’s lamentations and God’s answers, outweighs its use of intuitive prophecy, represented by Habakkuk’s words of woe. In terms of content, the problem of theodicy comes to the fore with a sharpness previously unknown. Against this background, the »autobiographical« character of the book allows the prophet to become a model of the »righteous,« who trust in God’s promised salvation despite suffering and the opacity of divine action in history.

Kurzfassung: The dating of the Masoretic »Sondergut« in the Book of Jeremiah varies between the late 6th and the middle of the 2nd century B.C. Evaluation of existing hypotheses shows that they are mostly based on unsustainable evidence. This is also true of the recent attempt to date the Book of Jeremiah (together with its Masoretic »Sondergut«) on a linguistic-historical basis. Part II offers alternative dating criteria, according to which the corpus originated predominantly in the 3rd century, with the possible exception of the promise in 33:14–26, which may be dated as late as after the middle of the 2nd century.
Kurzfassung: Following the predominantly negative results of the examination of older dating proposals for the materials unique to the Masoretic version of the book of Jeremiah in the first part of the article, this second part undertakes to develop reliable dating criteria. The age of the youngest units still included within the Alexandrian version of the book, the reinterpretation of the Elam oracle 49.34–39, as well as characteristic features of the Masoretic Sondergut (conceptual abstinence, homogenization even beyond the boundaries of the book, preservation of errors, the survival of distinctive idiolectal elements), point to the third century as the period of origin for the majority of the readings unique to the Masoretic version. With regard to current debates about linguistic dating methods, these results give reason to evaluate the accuracy of such methods as rather low.

Kurzfassung: The Hebrew word אֶלְגָּבִישׁ has typically been understood as referring to hail. This presents a lexical problem, given that all of its apparent cognates appear to refer to rock. Based on a reanalysis of existing lexical data with the inclusion of new cognates and a new analysis of the imagery contained within Ezekiel 13 and Ezekiel 38, this study proposes that Hebrew אֶלְגָּבִישׁ, Akkadian algamešu, Ugaritic, a͗lgbṯ, Egyptian, i͗rḳbs, and other related words all derive from Egyptian i͗nr-km.

Schlagwort(e): Bible. Criticism, interpretation, etc. ; Deuteronomistic history (Biblical criticism) ; Good and evil Biblical teaching ; Punishment Biblical teaching ; Hebrew language, Biblical Terms and phrases ; Jewish law Biblical teaching
Kurzfassung: This article argues for the importance of the purging formula in Judg 20:13. In the Deuteronomic Code, this formula provides the motivation for capital punishment in two areas relevant to the Judges narrative: first, apostasy and incitement to it, and, second, the perversion of Deuteronomic legal procedures. This study argues that both motifs are present in and important to Judges’ rendering of the Sodom-like outrage in Gibeah. The first is obvious. With regard to the second, the article argues that the Israelites err in their investigation of the case, and therefore their decisions and subsequent action lead to more violence and confusion. It is further argued that the triple oracular inquiry of YHWH in Judg 20:18–28 is presented as an inadequate substitute for proper forensic adjudication; it therefore does not lead to the establishment of order and justice.

Kurzfassung: The theme of demons connects three difficult passages in the Book of Job: Job’s curse on the day of his birth in 3:3–10, Eliphaz’s mocking censure of Job for that curse in 5:6–7, and 38:12–21, God’s challenge to Job for his appeal to demons. A crucial insight is provided by a Talmudic discussion of demons and human suffering, which connects Job 5:6–7 to Psalm 91:5–8.

Kurzfassung: Most recent publications dealing with the question of table fellowship between Jews and gentiles in Early Judaism stake the assumption for granted that there is a common discourse behind the available sources. Thus, the relevant Jewish narratives (Dan, Est, Jdt, JosAs, Tob, Arist) are mutually used for explanation. In contrast, Ruben A. Bühner uses the Daniel and Ester narratives to exemplify that the texts present complex discourses that must be distinguished from one another and that testify to different lines of reasoning, which cannot be reduced to a uniform discourse.

Kurzfassung: To this day there is no consensus about the dating and literary growth of the Hezekiah-Isaiah narratives. This paper is a contribution designed to clarify the literary history of these stories. It considers processes of innerbiblical exegesis, aspects of a text-critical analysis and facets of their absolute and relative dating. Simultaneously, observations on the multiple cross connections with other texts reveal the theological substance of the stories: Experiences of misery that appear in the older Isaiah tradition developed into a salvation-theological ideal in the Hezekiah-Isaiah narratives.
