Kurzfassung:
In many ghettos in the territories annexed by the USSR in 1939-40 which were occupied by the Germans in 1941, as well as in Romanian-occupied Transnistria, Jewish theaters were established. On the one hand, the Nazis permitted Jewish theatrical activities in the ghettos, supporting the illusion of possible Jewish coexistence with the Nazi regime in some future time. On the other hand, Jewish theater provided spiritual support to the ghetto Jews, helping them to survive. Dwells on the theater in the Vilna ghetto, viewing the performances in 1942-43 as acts of spiritual resistance.
