Abstract:
Most of the salons, held mainly in Berlin, took place in the homes of young Jewish women who were sociable, intelligent, and wealthy. Scholars have claimed that these salons were a prelude to later female emancipation. Criticizes this idealized image of the salons from the present-day perspective of women’s and gender history, presenting a more realistic view of the phenomenon based on writings from that period, in particular by and about Rahel Levin Varnhagen.
