Kurzfassung:
Discusses a recent initiative of Berkeley's mayor, Eugene Newport, backed by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and other anti-Israel organizations, to hold a vote to recommend that President Reagan and the Congress would reduce the aid package granted to Israel by "an amount equal to the most accurate approximation of what Israel spends annually on settlements in the occupied territories... of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights". They hoped the vote in Berkeley would spark a national demand for this action. The Jews of Berkeley (10% of the population) came together, in an unusual act of unity, and organized a strong public campaign against this proposition. The final vote came out in support for Israel.
