Abstract: A White-Painted IV jug acquired by the Nicosia Museum bears a short Phoenician inscription. A re-examination of this inscription reveals its contents: pine cones from Sidon. In the process, two new Phoenician words are identified for the first time, šbr = pine cone, ʾr = pine, words which should enter the vocabulary of West Semitic. Only the abbreviation “5 P” remains more enigmatic, probably referring to a measure. The Sidonian origin of the pine cone is the object of particular attention on the jug, perhaps emphasizing the quality of the pine seeds from that region.

Abstract: A sherd on the upper shoulder of a Late Philistine jug found in Site Q bears two fairly well-preserved letters, painted with a brush at the same time as the black band decoration on the body. The position of the last letter lying on the right makes it improbable that the direction of the writing was from the left to right. It is therefore possible to propose the more usual direction of writing from the right to left for the purpose of tracing the letters and to suggest an interpretation. It would have been an offering of precious metal to the shrine. It was located at the top of the tell on level Q-5. The offering would date from around 900 BC. The Phoenician type of writing at Megiddo gives some indication of its origin from the coastal region.

Abstract: In Voghensa, municipality of Voghiera near Ferrara, was discovered a fragment of terra sigillata incised after firing, which was initially attributed to a Jewish presence in the area. But a deciphering in the opposite direction suggests an inscription in neo-Punic characters. The first partially preserved word refers to a plate whose owner is given as Ḥwy, son of ʿlš.

Abstract: A new examination of the Phoenician inscription of Tartus seemed to be necessary, in parallel to the bilingual Greek- Phoenician inscription of Aruad, which shares with it the same palaeographic characteristics of the local scribal school. Although the proposed reading does not do misrepresent the text, the monument to which the plaque was to be attached remains unknown: a funerary monument, a gymnasium, or ? Dated around 100 BC, it still testifies to the use of Phoenician by an inhabitant who puts forward his Greek name for a good cause, even if he must also have had a Phoenician name.

Abstract: During various seasons of excavations on the fortress of Machaerus, a rather large number of ostraca were discovered, with some other Greek and Latin inscriptions. Their late and partial publication leaves open some questions concerning the reading and their interpretation. In 1994 the last Franciscan Father who dug there, Michele Piccirillo, entrusted me with the study of all the ostraca of the Studium biblicum Franciscanum excavations. I was therefore able to join a small number of them, reducing their number to 22 from an original total of 26. However, due to a lack of time, I was unable to complete the written report. Thus, now I am able to compare my first readings with the latest publication and give quite different conclusions; and in this note I am also publishing some ostraca which are unedited. I am also providing a revised reading of the ostraca discovered by the Hungarian mission, as well as of some of the American “Baptist Mission.” It is also the opportunity to collect the other Greek and Latin inscriptions for a general overview of this entire corpus, and to expose what is possible to gain from the history of the fortress in the first century aD. The Aramaic ostraca all date from the period of the reign of Herod Antipas, but not from the time of the Zealots’ presence at Machaerus. These ostraca are unique and important as they document for the first time the supplies to the royal palace at the time of the imprisonment and execution of John the Baptist. The memento of this event is still present on the small inscribed stone of the monk Markos from the Byzantine period.
