Abstract:
447 people were interviewed for this survey conducted in September 1990, using the Bogardus scale of social distance to measure the degree of ethnic intolerance toward 23 ethnic groups. States that the results did not confirm a widely-held view regarding prevalent mass antisemitism. Although 13% of Ukrainians and 9% of Russians indicated that they would not allow Jews into Kiev, overall on the scale of social distance the Jews occupied fourth place in national acceptability. Contends that the fact that ca. one third of the respondents did not wish to have Jews as work colleagues and one fifth did not want them in Kiev should be viewed in the context of the low level of national tolerance. Antisemitism was connected with a negative attitude to ethnic minorities in general.
