Abstract:
Demonstrates the transfer of medieval images and stereotypes of the Jew to the image of the Converso in the literary works of Portuguese writers such as Gil Vicente, Garcia de Resende, Francisco da Silveira, Alvaro de Brito Pestana, Frey Amador Arrais, Francisco Sa de Miranda, and others. The hostile attitude toward the Converso expressed an overall tendency to prevent their integration in Portuguese society. Focuses on images related to economic themes, which attributed to the Conversos a preoccupation with money, usury, inferior trades, and related negative characteristics. also presents social images which emphasize the marginal and inferior status of the Conversos and their alien cultural and social features. In general, the Converso is presented as a Jew in disguise who endangers the Portuguese nation.
