Abstract:
The author's father, Israeli psychoanalyst Erich Neumann, worked and studied with Jung in Zurich in 1933-34, and then emigrated to Palestine. Their correspondence from 1934 to 1959 shows no evidence of Jung's antisemitism, although he did express pro-Nazi, pro-Aryan, and anti-Jewish thoughts in journals and letters during the period of the Third Reich. Concludes that Jung was an antisemite at that time, but his antisemitism was rooted deep in his unconscious - in Jungian terms it was his "shadow" with which he never contended, and he therefore never achieved the individuation which he preached to others and sought for himself throughout his life. See the reaction by Micha Ancori, "Jung and the Jewish Problem" ["Sihot" 6, 2 (Mar 1992) 195-197], in which he contends that Jung had a high regard for Jewish thought and principles, and was not an antisemite. See the response to Ancori by Micha Neumann ["Sihot" 6, 3 (1992) 277], and another reaction by Ruth Netzer ["Sihot" 8, 1 (1993) 75-76].
