Abstract:
The trial of Chief Rabbi Béla Berend, a member of the Hungarian Central Jewish Council, took place in November 1946. In April 1947 he was acquitted of the charges brought against him: publication of an article in the Arrow Cross newspaper "Harc", and his participation in the Arrow Cross raids in the ghettos of Budapest. Berend was also accused of helping the Gestapo in collecting data about Jews and, in return, getting a pass which gave him freedom of movement. The statements of defense proved his innocence. The article in "Harc" (29 July 1944), "Egy rabbi a zsidók tömeges megkeresztelkedéséről", speaks against the mass baptism of Jews. Berend argued that he could publish it only in this newspaper.
