Abstract:
Surveys extant studies on the rescue of Jews by non-Jews (both individuals and organizations) during World War II and notes their shortcomings. The very notion of rescue activity has not been clearly delineated, and study of the topic to date has been very narrowly defined, either as sociological inquiry into the nature of altruism or as the history of individual rescuers. Demonstrates the complexities of dealing with the question of the role of religious conviction in the motivation of rescuers. The role of the Churches in inspiring rescue is more complicated than is usually admitted. The motives of some individual rescuers were far from pure; e.g. some tried to profit from those they rescued or to abuse them sexually. Proposes to place the study of rescue in a wider context by focusing on links between rescue activities and other forms of resistance, taking a regional rather than a national approach to the topic, and examining traditions of rescue.
