Abstract:
States that Perón was more benevolent towards Jews than many other Argentinian leaders. Contends that although he was a former member of the leading junta (1943-45) which admired Mussolini, was linked to fascism, and passed antisemitic laws banning Jewish publications and condoning anti-Jewish attacks during his first term as president (1946-55), Perón was not racist and had a capricious, but not malevolent, attitude towards Jews. However, he advocated assimilation, promoted a nativism not deprived of anti-Jewish prejudice, condoned anti-Jewish publications, and his political rallies attracted crowds with the aid of antisemitic appeals.
