Abstract:
In December 1952, following the Slansky trial in Czechoslovakia, Paul Merker, a leading East German communist, was arrested and charged as an agent for American imperialism and Zionism. He was released in 1956. Merker's main "crimes" were his belief that opposition to antisemitism should be a central component of the communist struggle and his strong support for the State of Israel.
