First presented as a paper at the Kant-Gymnasium in Boppard, this work is based on archival research and on an interview with Kann about his experiences in the Nazi period. Kann was a student at the Boppard Gymnasium; he was forced to leave it in 1937, at the age of 15. Describes the Aryanization of his father's factory, the family's empoverishment, and their move to Köln, from where they were deported in December 1941 to Riga. Artur was sent to the Salaspils labor camp, from there to an SS auto workshop in Riga, then to Kaiserwald, and from there to Strasdenhof, where he rejoined his parents. In 1944 his parents were killed together with all the other older prisoners. Artur was returned to the auto workshop in Kaiserwald, where he had to prepare SS vehicles for evacuation and repair them along the way. He arrived in Stutthof, was sent from there to Burggraben, and then to Gotendorf to care for the SS's horses during their evacuation. On March 10 he was liberated by the Red Army. He returned to Emmelshausen and reopened his family's factory.
