Abstract:
This paper analyses the archaeological and architectural remains of the medieval synagogue of Híjar (Spain). Unearthed in 2017/2018 in a hermitage dedicated to San Antonio Abad, the study of this synagogue is particularly noteworthy: the synagogue is extraordinarily well preserved, with both the architecture of the prayer hall, the tevah, the hekhal and the gallery of women distinctly recognizable. In addition, the synagogue displays some interesting decorative motifs by way of paintings and plasterworks. In studying the synagogue, the literature on the architecture and artwork of Sephardic synagogues is enriched. Built in the first third of the 15th century, the synagogue of Híjar takes its place as one of the few medieval synagogues that have been preserved in good condition in Spain.
