Abstract:
Discusses historiography of the past two centuries (mainly 20th century) on the Roman Inquisition and the Spanish Inquisition in the 15th-16th centuries, and their connections. Examines attempts of some scholars to explain the “general principles to which the Inquisition subscribed” (i.e. to reconstruct its Christian theology), and efforts to argue that there were practical reasons for the Inquisition. Pp. 80-85 focus on the talmudic/anti-talmudic theology of the 16th century which was used lately to legitimize the Inquisition. Queries whether Inquisitors of the 16th century had access to the Talmudic texts, or were they influenced by earlier works, in particular the "Pugio Fidei" of the 13th century. Pp. 90-106 deal with the many recent studies on Spanish literature of the 16th century - by Alcyonius, Francisco Delicado, Alfonso de Zamora, and Antonio de Guevara, all of whom dealt with the state of Jews and Conversos in a decadent Rome. The great interest in these writings indicate that the views in the 16th century still have repercussions on historiography and literary criticism today.
