Abstract: Criticizes Gross's book, contending that he formed his conclusions before he began his research; that he ignores or misinterprets testimony that contradicts his theses - in particular, evidence of the active part played by German police in the massacre; and that he relies on untrustworthy witnesses and ignores the fact that the communist regime, which directed the 1949 investigation, Gross's main source, had an interest in discrediting pre-communist Poland. Asserts that Gross's work is exploited by both Left and Right in Germany to cast some of Germany's guilt on the Poles, and that scholars who dare to dispute Gross's presentation are viciously attacked. The response by Frank Golczewski, "Der Jedwabne-Diskurs: Bemerkungen im Anschluss an den Artikel von Bogdan Musial" (pp. 412-437), supports Musial's criticism of Gross's use of sources, but cites important sources used by neither Gross nor Musial that confirm that although the Germans inspired the pogrom they did not take part in it. Discusses the dispute over Gross's book in both Germany and Poland, noting that in Poland arguments against Gross by serious scholars were selectively taken up by antisemites and radical nationalists.
