Abstract:
Examines the role of political denunciations - the participation of ordinary citizens in the policing process, based on Gestapo files from Würzburg and Düsseldorf. As 26% of all cases began with a denunciation from the population, concludes that this was an important factor in the operation of the system of terror. The Gestapo was particularly dependent on informers for the enforcement of laws pertaining to social relations with Jews. also discusses the use of entrapment, the social status of informers, and conflicting messages from government ministries in regard to the growing number of false denunciations. Some of the false accusers were brought to trial.
