Abstract:
Based on several medieval accounts, discusses the Talmud trial of 1240 in Paris, focusing on the role of Rabbi Yehiel of Paris, who was called on by the Inquisition to speak in defense of the Talmud in against the convert Nicolas Donin. The latter maintained that the Talmud contradicted biblical truth and should be burned. The precise circumstances of the trial are not clear, but it was probably preceded by a disputation between Donin and Rabbi Yehiel. Rabbi Yehiel's own account of the proceedings stresses his attempts to explain the importance of the Talmud in biblical interpretation. Discusses, also, reflections of these events in the works of contemporary rabbis, particularly Moses of Coucy.
