Antisemitism History 1800-2000
Abstract:
Contrary to general opinion, antisemitism did exist in the First Czech Republic, established in 1918 by Tomáš Masaryk. Focuses on antisemitic agitation in October 1918, during which Jews were expelled from restaurants, Jewish enterprises were demolished, and Jews were maltreated. Notes that the Czech perpetrators were educated members of the middle class. Antisemitism had been a part of Czech society for a long time and the democratic republic was not able to efface it, only to cover it up. In November 1920 the Jewish council building in Prague was occupied and damaged, and documents were thrown out into the street. During the second half of the 1920s, antisemitism decreased temporarily.
