Abstract:
Opposes the approach to German history which minimizes the Germans' guilt for the Holocaust. This attitude, recently adopted by the German government, has been propagated by the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" in an attempt to prove that Nazi-type crimes could have been committed elsewhere. Discusses articles by K.F. Fromme and J. Fest, and notes that Fest's article lends support to Nolte's comparison of Hitler with Stalin.

Appeared also in "Historikerstreit" (1987) 352-359. Appeared in French as "Le régime des nazis; une tyrannie ordinaire? Sur le mauvais usage des interprétations philosophiques de l'histoire" in "Devant l'histoire" (1988) 291-296, and in English as "The Nazi reign - a case of normal tyranny? On the misuse of philosophical interpretations" in "Forever in the Shadow of Hitler?" (1994) 237-242.
