Abstract:
States that the view of the Jews' collective guilt for the crucifixion of Jesus was the basis of Christian anti-Judaism. In a 1992 poll conducted in Germany, 39% of the general public, 60% of church-going Catholics, and 48% of Protestants affirmed the guilt of the Jews, apparently under the influence of Church teachings. Points out that except for Tacitus, who mentions crucifixion by the Roman governor (and not by the Jews), the only historical sources are the Gospels. These do not fit what we know about the rules of the Sanhedrin and the role of the Jews under Roman governorship. Jesus was apparently crucified for political, not religious reasons. Contends that denying Jewish complicity in the crucifixion does not detract from faith in Jesus' sacrificial death for the redemption of mankind. Pp. 50-54 contain comments from the audience.
