Abstract:
Discusses identity problems of Hannah Arendt who considered herself a Jewess and a German at the same time. States that Nazi antisemitism provoked her to reflect more on Jewishness, history and memory. Comments on Arendt's writings on Jewish themes, among others "Rahel Varnhagen" which, however, does not reflect her own problems because Arendt never felt ashamed that she was a Jew and never tried to assimilate. Analyzes Arendt's relationship to the Jewish people, and her perception of the idea of the Jewish state. Relates to her articles written for the German refugee journal "Aufbau", which appeared in the USA from 1941, in which she wrote in favor of Jewish politics and commented on events in Europe under Nazi rule and on the fate of the Jews. Deals, as well, with Arendt's views on totalitarianism and antisemitism which she perceived as a strictly political phenomenon.
