Kurzfassung:
Three recent books by Jewish American writers - Nathan Englander's story "The Tumblers", in his collection "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges" (1999), Jonathan Safran Foer's "Everything Is Illuminated" (2002), and Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" (2000) - use fantasy to represent the Holocaust or deal with the problem of its representation. Englander's story "The Tumblers" transports the fools of Chelm into a Nazi world, but they survive. Foer uses magic realism to describe the search for a shtetl which has disappeared. Chabon's work uses the non-realistic superhero comic book to present fantasy as a means of escaping from history, a particularly American artistic response to the Holocaust.
