Kurzfassung:
Examines some of the ways in which early modern German writings portrayed Jewish visions of the endtime. The notion of Jewish deceit was central to Christian attempts to undermine the meaning of Jewish messianism; however, while medieval works depicted Jews as credulous and blind people, early modern works depicted them as active deceivers. Christian writers transformed Jewish messianic claimants into precursors of the Antichrist, or even identified the Antichrist with the person whom the Jews expected as their messiah. Notions of inherent Jewish deceitfulness complicated Christian expectations concerning Jewish conversion at the end of time and challenged traditional medieval tolerance of Jews. Traces these themes in the writings of Luther, Folz, Grimmelshausen, and other authors, including some converted Jews.
