Abstract:
A revised version of a paper presented at the Central Renaissance Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 1992. Discusses Calvin's "Ad quaestiones et objecta Judaei cuiusdem responsio" ("Response to Questions and Objections of a Certain Jew"), identifying it as a reply to the 14th-century anti-Christian "Sefer ha-Nizzahon". Comments that Calvin accuses the Jews of understanding neither their own nor the Christian Scriptures, but does not repeat other accepted anti-Jewish teachings such as the curse on the Jews for their crucifixion of Jesus. His language is vituperative, but not more so than that of the "Nizzahon" or of his own polemics against Christian opponents.
