Abstract:
Traces the development of commemorative ceremonies in Israel for two thematically similar days, both occurring in the spring, one week apart: the Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) and the Memorial Day for Fallen Israel Defense Forces Soldiers. Yom Hashoah was introduced later than Memorial Day - only in 1951 - and underwent a long evolution, in the course of which it gained greater importance and its ritual came close to that of Memorial Day. Examines the ceremonies as part of a series of holidays and remembrance days which start with Passover and end with Jerusalem Day six weeks later. The Passover story resurfaces in the narratives of both ceremonies and places them in a wider historical context; it produces a sense of the continuity of the Jewish people, with emphasis on the cycle of their suffering and rebirth. Focuses on similarities and differences in the two ceremonies' micro-narratives.
