Abstract:
Slavs, both Orthodox and Catholic, associated Jews and Muslims with swine. According to Slavic beliefs, adherents to Judaism and Islam (perceived as one and the same by some Slavs) abstain from eating pork because of a kinship between them and swine. Presents variations on this motif in Slavic folklore and in some non-Slavic sources.
