Abstract:
Examines the image of Jews in medieval Islamic literary and theological works - the two were often intermixed. Two contradictory trends developed, but were also intertwined: the one borrowed from the Jewish and Christian traditions, adapting tales from the Bible and the Midrash, and elaborated stories about the Israelites (called "Israiliyyat"); the other emphasized the differences between Islam and Judaism. When the Qur'an's version of a biblical tale was contradicted by the Hebrew Bible, the Jews were accused of falsifying their Bible's text. Some medieval Arabic writers depicted the Jews as wretched and pitiful, uncultured and untrustworthy. Notes that there are cases, as well, in which the Jew is an important personage.
