Kurzfassung: A paper delivered at a conference in Sydney, 1987, based on a previous paper by Kwiet published in "Die Juden in Deutschland, 1933-1945", ed. W. Benz (1988). Contesting Broszat's "improvization thesis" concerning the Final Solution, discusses the early Nazi program of isolation and expulsion of Jewish inhabitants in Germany and Austria as a first stage of their deportation and annihilation. The Aryanization of Jewish property began at the end of 1937 and was enforced after the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, supported by a broad public consensus. The seizure of Jewish homes was motivated by racist ideology and material interests. Concludes that there is a clear link between the housing shortage and the final expulsion - from ghettoization to deportation and finally to mass murder.

Kurzfassung: Nazi policies aimed at the destruction of Jewish economic existence left behind an army of jobless Jews up to 1939. At the end of 1938, measures were taken to exploit the Jewish labor force in Germany. Military experts were especially interested in exploiting Jewish labor for the war effort. By March 1941, the number of German Jews conscripted for work reached 73,000. Describes the conditions of Jewish work in Germany and payment for it. In autumn 1941, when thousands of slave laborers and POWs were brought to Germany, the deportation of Jewish workers, including those engaged in the armaments industry, began. The representatives of the military industry argued that the mass "replacement" of the Jewish workers would harm the production process, but in February 1943 the last "armament Jews" were deported; Nazi racial fanatism overcame practical considerations. Pp. 408-410 present a memo on a joint meeting of representatives of the police and the Ministry of Interior, held on 28.2.1939, dealing with the exploitation of Jewish labor in case of war.
Anmerkung: Appeared also in "Holocaust; Critical Concepts in Historical Studies" II (2004).

Kurzfassung: Traces the evolution of German policy for the extermination of the Jews in Lithuania and the agencies through which orders were transmitted. The first orders (June 1941) were for the shooting of men only; but they were soon expanded to include women and children. There followed ghettoization and the "cleansing" of rural areas of Jews. At the urging of the SS, it was decided to include half-Jews; suggests that this was a main purpose of the Wannsee Conference. In June 1943 Hitler ordered Himmler to carry out the deportations to extermination camps. It is estimated that ca. 2,000 Jews escaped, half of them in hiding, the other half in the forests. Some partisan bands welcomed the participation of Jews; others cooperated with the Germans in hunting them down. Pp. 412-418 contain brief reports by local units of the SS on raids by "bandits" (partisans), among them Jews. These documents, preserved in the newly opened Soviet state archives, are here published for the first time.

Kurzfassung: Discusses the participation of Jews in the politically organized forms of anti-fascism before the Nazi period, and different strategies of Jewish opposition to the Nazi regime. At the beginning of the Nazi period, the representatives of German Jewish organizations pledged to respect the law. They were not prepared to call for mass emigration. After the halt of emigration in October 1941, one third of the Jewish population of 1933 was still living in Germany. The German conservative-bourgeois resistance was not interested in rallying the Jews. The persecution of the Jews did not have a decisive role in the struggle of the German workers’ movement. However, the leftist resistance invited ca. 2,000 Jewish socialists and communists to join in the anti-Nazi struggle. The 32 members of the Jewish communist group led by Herbert Baum attempted to destroy an anti-Soviet exhibition in Berlin in May 1942; 500 Jewish hostages were murdered in reprisal. Ca. 5,000 Berlin Jews chose to live in hiding; 1,402 of them survived. The limited Jewish resistance and opposition are linked to the lack of solidarity and assistance from non-Jews.
