Abstract: Although Tacitus depicts the Jews as being despised and accursed in the first part of book 5 of his "Histories", one finds a significant analogy between Tacitus's Jews (and some other barbarians) and the history of Rome itself. While Titus's victory over the Jews supports the view of the superiority of Roman life and institutions, the account of the defeat of the Jews appears also to reflect concern about the fate of Rome itself, particularly its just recent revival from civil war, and uncertainty about its future. Despite differences noted between Romans and Jews, some crucial similarities are posited. Since the extant text does not extend much further than the destruction of the Temple, there is no clear evidence of how Tacitus would have treated the Jewish War against Rome.
