Abstract:
In his early writings, Locke mentioned existing toleration of Jews in England only as an argument for the toleration of the Dissidents. It was an important theme in his first "Letter on Toleration" (written in 1685-86, published anonymously in 1689), in which he called for freedom of worship and for the naturalization of the Jews in England. However, partly under pressure from opponents (chiefly Jonas Proast) who considered the Jews a danger to England, and partly because of his increasingly millenarian tendencies, in subsequent publications Locke presented toleration of Jews only as a means to their conversion; he saw their proper place not in England, but in Palestine.
