Abstract:
Argues that Pius XII's silence concerning the persecution of Jews was determined partly by his indecisive character, but mainly by his fear of possible harm to German Catholics and his reluctance to weaken Germany in its fight against communism. Emphasizes that the Pope echoed the silence of the German bishops who, like him, knew about the Nazi policy vis-a-vis the Jews. The Pope's political impotence, accentuated by the German occupation of Rome in 1943-44, reinforced his conviction that diplomatic relations had to be maintained at all costs. Contends that the Pope's passivity reflected the long tradition of Christian hostility toward the Jews.
