Abstract:
Criticizes recent Israeli historiography, especially Tom Segev's "The Seventh Million" (1991), for vaunting accusations against David Ben-Gurion, head of the Jewish Agency for most of the World War II period. Opposes, in particular, the accusation that he used the Holocaust in order to achieve his goal of a Jewish state. His accusers state that he was apathetic to the plight of the Jews in Europe, did not identify with them, actually disliked them, and was contemptuous of the meagre attempts to rescue them - all stemming from his belief in "negation of the diaspora". Shows, quoting from numerous protocols of meetings, that all of these accusations are false, that Ben-Gurion had a unique grasp of historical processes, that he was very much concerned with events in Europe and the suffering of the Jews, and that his concern to establish a Jewish state was so that the Jews of Europe would have a haven when no other country wanted them. As for accusations that he did little in the sphere of rescue, states that the main obstacle was the Nazis' policy, British policy regarding immigration to Palestine, and the rejection of Jews by most countries in the world; it was not Ben-Gurion who blocked rescue efforts.
