Abstract:
Guibert of Nogent, a 12th-century abbot, was the author of "Tractatus de Incarnatione contra Iudeos", in which he discusses the question why the Jews cannot accept the dogma of the Virgin birth and the incarnation of Jesus. It is, he assumes, because they reject the figurative understanding of the Bible and insist on its literal meaning, and this is so because they are usurers and are obsessed by love of money and the lures of material gains. Guibert was influenced by Anselm's views on the relation between reason and faith; thus the Jew, who lives a wholly material life, cannot overcome his reason and elevate himself to the proper faith. The treatise was written in a time of commercial revolution in Europe, and Guibert's hatred for the Jews exposes his rejection of modernity - of the new reality.
