Abstract:
Discusses the preparation of "The Black Book" by the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in the Soviet Union between 1943-45. "The Black Book: The Ruthless Murder of Jews by German-Fascist Invaders throughout the Temporarily-Occupied Regions of the Soviet Union and in the Death Camps of Poland during the War of 1941-1945" was a merger of two intended projects - an anthology of documents and literary accounts of the Holocaust - which were combined in one book ready for publication in 1945. Contends that while the Soviets initially saw the work as a propaganda attempt to gain the sympathy of (mainly American) Jews for the Soviet struggle against the Germans, the Jewish editors sought public awareness of the Holocaust among Russian Jews and Gentiles as well. The suppression of the book's publication by Soviet authorities (1945) is evidence of the Soviet policy of concealing the extent of the Holocaust.
