Abstract:
Presents the plot of Shakespeare's play and states that it is clearly antisemitic. Mentions recurring attempts on the part of Jews in the 19th-20th centuries to clear Shakespeare from the ignominy of antisemitism, discussing the views of Heinrich Heine and Israel Zangwill. Rabbi Zvi Carlebach wrote that Shakespeare was like Balaam - he came to curse but ended by blessing the Jewish people. Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin (1890-1978) wrote that the bond made by Shylock has no validity in Jewish law (Halakhah); it was influenced by Venetian Christian cruelty and in no way can it originate from Jewish practice which forbids dealing in parts of the human body.
