Abstract:
Discusses questions of memory and survival in the works about the Holocaust written by Semprún, anti-Nazi resistance fighter and survivor of Buchenwald. Semprún was born in 1923 in Madrid; his family went into exile in France in 1937. Focuses on his novel "Le grand voyage" (1963), which deals with deportation from France to Buchenwald, a fictionalized account of his own experiences. Compares Semprún with Paul Celan, who committed suicide. Suggests that, for Semprún, reliving the Holocaust was also a threat to his life, but writing enabled him to survive the trauma; however, by doing so, he relived some of the deaths he witnessed, as well as the death of part of himself. Semprún's work combines history and fiction, and expresses a permanent sense of displacement. "Le grand voyage" deals with a deportation from France to Buchenwald.
