Abstract:
In this study, I contend that Thomas Moore Johnson’s interest in esoteric Platonism and practical occultism turned his tiny hometown of Osceola, MO into a kabbalistic center in the 1880s. A particular version of Kabbalah was received, originally re-elaborated, and disseminated—largely among non-Jews—in this corner of the United States through the writings Johnson acquired and lent, the articles and translations he published in his journal The Platonist, and the practices he engaged in as a prominent member of two esoteric groups—the Theosophical Society and the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor.
