Abstract:
Ambrose (340-97), bishop of Milano between 374-97, thought that the survival of Judaism after the arrival of Christianity was a historical anomaly. He believed that the Jews' failure to believe in Jesus had caused God to absolve their primogeniture and give it to the Christians. Ambrose contended that Jewish literal, materialistic, and "carnal" interpretations of the Scriptures had prevented them from recognizing Jesus as the Messiah. Concludes that these views set the theological premises for the later legal system of segregation of the Jews in the Roman Empire.
