Abstract:
On a controversy which arose between 1906-1921 regarding the appointment of a Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel following the death of Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elyashar in 1906. The Chief Rabbinate in Constantinople did not want to acknowledge the candidate chosen by the community in Eretz Israel. That community then demanded autonomy, i.e. not to be dependent on the decisions of the Chief Rabbinate in Turkey who wished to appoint the son of Rabbi Elyashar. The debates continued until 1921, when Rabbi Yaakov Meir, the candidate of the Jerusalem community, was finally appointed. During this period, Sephardi communities in other countries began to fight for autonomy from the Turkish Rabbinate.
