Abstract: As a city-state, the Republic of Dubrovnik allowed its citizens and inhabitants freedom of movement and travelling abroad. Passports have been found in the Municipal Archives which were issued from their enactment in 1624 to the fall of the Republic in 1808 .The Chancellery emphasized, as a rule, whether its bearer was a citizen or a foreigner. The Jews were treated as foreigners in the beginning, but later (certainly from the fourth decade of the 18th century and probably even earlier) as citizens. The passports which they were given were made out, as for all citizens, in Italian for the Mediterranean countries and ports and in Serbian.
