Abstract:
Analyzes the administrative and religious organization of the Jewish community in Bulgaria. Points out the Jewish community's efforts during the 1930s to combat the antisemitism of right-wing groups such as Rodna Zashtita (Defense of the Bulgarian Fatherland) and its newspaper. States that official antisemitism was unknown in Bulgaria until December 1940 when King Boris III ratified the National Defense Law stripping Jews of all civic rights. A commissariat for Jewish matters was founded in 1942 to deal with confiscation of Jewish property, and in 1943 the Jews from the big cities were transferred to provincial transit and labor camps, but the project of general deportation to Poland was dropped due to popular opposition.
