Abstract:
Discusses Polish collaboration with the Nazis, focusing on the persecution of Jews, noting that many Poles saw the Jews as an enemy common to themselves and the Germans. In 1940 left-wing Polish underground journals condemned collaboration with the Nazis, including in the persecution of Jews, but the Germans welcomed Polish attacks on Jews. They used these attacks to argue that Jews would be better protected if they were interned in ghettos. Notes that there were many attacks on Jews in spring 1940, as well as in summer 1941, with the Nazi occupation of the areas vacated by the Soviets. The Poles in these areas saw the Germans as liberators, and expressed their hatred of the Soviets in attacks on the "communist" Jews, such as the pogrom in Jedwabne. The Germans encouraged such attacks, since it made their work easier.
