Abstract:
Discusses Gross's "Neighbors", focusing on his confrontation with Polish historians. Notes that Gross recognizes the value of Holocaust testimony and accepts the fact that the Poles in Jedwabne acted independently. They may have been encouraged by the Nazis to commit the murders, but were not pressured by them. The perpetrators were motivated by greed and by the anti-Jewish stereotype of the "communist Jew". Gross maintains that Jewish collaboration with the Soviets was almost non-existent in Jedwabne, and that Poles used this stereotype to ease their conscience. There were ca. 35 such massacres in the region. Suggests that studies of such incidents should include study of Polish-Jewish relations in those same areas in the interwar period.
