Abstract:
Analyzes the historico-political background and implications of the controversy surrounding the staging of Fassbinder's "Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod" ("Garbage, the City and Death") by the Frankfurt Theatre in 1985. States that the play is ostensibly anti-capitalist and anti-fascist while reproducing the classic stereotypes of antisemitic mythology. Examines the motivations of the Left in support of the production and the Right against it in terms of the desire for a "normalization" of the German past. Contends that the issues raised in the controversy involve the meaning of "normalization" in the German-Jewish context much more than whether or not Fassbinder's play is antisemitic.
