Abstract:
Surveying historical sources and the symbolic importance of the Star of David, recalls the use made of it by the persecutors of Jews in the Middle Ages and by the Nazis in the 20th century to humiliate the Jews. Relates the ambiguous reactions of the German population to this mark of the Jew, which - in the beginning - aroused sympathy instead of the planned aversion. The threat of punishment by the authorities, and the progressive habituation to this sight, changed the population's attitude from sympathy to indifference.
